Lott Leads Volleyhawks To Black & Gold Title

BOONE, North Carolina – Led by tournament most valuable player Nicole Lott's match-high 17 kills, UNCW rallied to win the fifth set against Wofford for a 3-2 win and take home the Black & Gold Classic championship on Saturday at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The Seahawks improved to 5-1 with the win after topping Ohio, 3-1, earlier in the day. The Terriers, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3 with the setback. UNCW has won both tournaments its played in this season.

"This weekend was full of pressure moments and I was impressed with our confidence and compure'" said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Wofford and Ohio gave us a lot to handle, but we had some key players come in off the bench and give us the spark we needed. I'm extremely proud of how our veterans and freshmen worked together to pull out the win against Wofford."

Lott notched a double-double, adding a team-high 21 digs. Setter Alyssa Desjardins, an all-tournament selection, also put together a double-double with 27 assists and 18 digs. Anna Moss, who also was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 13 kills in 27 attacks and totaled six blocks.

Bijonae Jones paced Wofford with 14 kills while Catie Cronister fashioned a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Setter Lorissa King doled out 39 assists and collected 19 digs. Madeline Savage held match-high honors with 28 digs.

In the third set, UNCW trailed 16-12 but rattled off six consecutive points for an 18-16 lead. The Seahawks again trailed late, 23-21, but outscored OU, 5-1, to win the set, 26-24.

Up next: The Seahawks will compete in the North Texas Invitational, hosted by North Texas in Denton, Texas. It'll be a homecoming for UNCW's Sydney Brock and Alyssa Desjardins, both of whom hail from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

How it happened: The Seahawks did not commit a hitting error in the final set, collecting 11 kills in 34 attacks. The score was tied on 15 occasions in the fifth set.
