WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior forwards
Julio Moncada and
Stian Sandbekkhaug each scored a goal as UNCW extended its winning streak to four straight games with a 2-0 victory over Winthrop in the finale of the UNCW SpringHill Suites Classic at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who won the tournament for the second straight year, improved to 4-0-0 on the season. Meanwhile, Winthrop dropped to 3-3-0 after suffering its second consecutive loss.
Moncada, who was named as the tournament's Offensive MVP, gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when he collected a header off a Winthrop defender and blasted a 20-yard shot for his fourth goal of the season.
With 10:25 remaining in the second half, Sandbekkhaug upped the margin to 2-0 when he scored his fourth goal of the season on a 17-yard shot past junior goalkeeper
Kenneth Perkinson.
Led by freshman defender
Mark Lindstrom, who was named as the tournament's Defensive MVP, UNCW limited Winthrop to just five shots en route to posting its second straight shutout.
