Volleyhawks Take Third Tournament Title Of The Season

DENTON, Texas – Nicole Lott's 14 kills led three Seahawks in double figures as UNCW finished off its weekend sweep at the North Texas Invitational with a 3-1 win (25-16, 25-15, 21-25, 25-18) over the host Eagles on Saturday at the North Texas Volleyball Center.

UNCW improved to 8-1 with its sixth consecutive victory while UNT dropped to 4-7.

"This was a successful weekend for a number of reasons," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "I was pleased with our offensive hitting percentage in each match and felt we had numerous players step up in pressure moments."

Joining Lott in double-figure kills were Maddy Kline and tournament most valuable player Sydney Brock, both with 12 kills apiece. The Seahawks combined for a .273 hitting average and totaled 13.5 blocks. Leading the charge at the net was Anna Moss with five total blocks and four each from Brock, Lott and Madison Peters.

"Our middle attack is getting stronger each weekend and defensively, I like our effort and hustle. Going 3-0 on any trip is difficult, but it was extra special being in Texas, surrounded by family and friends."

UNT's Amanda Chamberlain led all players with 23 kills while Alexis Wright chipped in 16. Offensively, the Eagles were forced into 33 hitting errors and finished with a .136 average.

UNCW setter Alyssa Desjardins, who joined Lott and Brock on the all-tournament team, handed out 27 assists and had five digs.

How it happened: UNCW grabbed a 2-0 lead through the first two sets by out-hitting UNT, .322-.028. After UNT fired back with a win in the third set behind 20 kills, UNCW returned to its defense in the fourth set for the win.

Notes: UNCW improved to 25-8 in in-season tournaments with its seventh tournament victory in its last three seasons … Nicole Lott moved into ninth on UNCW's all-time kills list with 987 … Alyssa Desjardins, meanwhile, now ranks fourth on UNCW's assists list with 2,150.

Up next: UNCW returns to Hanover Hall on Sept. 13 for a 6 p.m. start with longtime rival Campbell. The Seahawks then close out their non-conference schedule at Duke (Sept. 17) and NC State (Sept. 18).
