Seahawks Drop Series To Dukes With 11-7 Setback

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – James Madison took advantage of five unearned runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and clinch a Colonial Athletic Association series from UNCW with a 11-7 win on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes (20-28, 10-11 CAA) stayed in the hunt for a CAA tournament berth while the Seahawks, who have already clinched a top-two seed, fell to 35-13 overall and 14-5 in the league.

Zach Tondi led JMU with three hits and three runs batted in while Kyle McPherson went 2-for-5 with four runs scored and two knocked in.

Ben Garner (1-2) picked up the win of the Dukes. The righthander held the Seahawks to a run over 3.2 innings.

Austin Magestro (4-3) was the unlucky loser, allowing five runs, all unearned, in the sixth inning.

Steven Linkous, Brian Mims and Zack Canada, who drove in two runs, finished with two hits apiece. Linkous tripled in the second inning to become UNCW's all-time leader with 12.

Up next: UNCW concludes its non-conference schedule with a 6 p.m. start at Coastal Carolina on May 17.

Home Runs: UNCW – Mims (off Leckert in the sixth inning, none on, one out); JMU – McPherson (off Gantz in the third inning, one on, two out)

How it happened: After tying the game in the top of the sixth, UNCW surrendered four unearned runs in the bottom half. Magestro walked the bases loaded and fought back to get the second out on a strikeout, but a fielding error gave JMU the lead and the Dukes tacked on four more runs for an 11-6 lead.
