UNCW Powers Its Way To Series Clinching Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – UNCW used four solo home runs and 3.2 shutout innings from the bullpen to rally past William & Mary for a 7-4 Colonial Athletic Association series clinching win on Saturday at Plumeri Park.

The Seahawks, winners of their last three road games, raised their record to 18-9 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Tribe, meanwhile, slipped to 15-15 and 4-3.

Homering for the Seahawks were Brian Mims, Gavin Stupienski, Casey Golden and Andy Austin as UNCW scored five runs over the final two innings to rally from a 4-2 deficit. Steven Linkous and Mims finished with two hits apiece and Linkous swiped his 19th base of the season.

Reliever Taylor Hyssong (1-0) picked up the win while closer Jared Gesell earned his fourth save of the season.

Tribe closer Joe Gaouette (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk over two innings.

Kyle Wrighte collected two hits for the Tribe, which erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth.

Up next: The Seahawks and Tribe finish off the weekend series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

Home Runs: UNCW – Mims (off Bodie in the first inning, none on, one out), Stupienski (off Bodie in the sixth inning, none on, one out), Golden (off Gaouette in the eighth inning, none on, two out), Austin (off Gaouette in the ninth (pinch hit), leadoff)

How it happened: The Seahawks overcame a 4-2 deficit in the eighth inning with a one-out rally. Linkous and Mims came across on wild pitches by Gaouette to tie the game and Nick Feight pushed the eventual winning run across with a ground ball out. Golden then capped the outburst with a solo shot over the scoreboard in left.
