Stack, Foster Lead UNCW To CAA Opening Win Over Elon

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Daniel Stack had three hits and pitcher Ryan Foster stayed perfect on the season with seven strong innings as UNCW topped visiting Elon, 10-4, in the Seahawks' Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 14-6 with their fifth straight win while Elon dropped to 9-13 and 1-3 in the CAA.

Stack led UNCW's offense, one that generated 10 runs on 12 hits and drew six walks. Adding two-hit games for the Seahawks were Zack Canada and Robbie Thorburn. Canada and Gavin Stupienski belted their second and fourth home runs of the season, respectively.

Foster (5-0) earned his fifth win in six starts the season, allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out three while recording 12 outs on ground ball, including a pair of ground ball double plays.

Kyle Jackson doubled twice while Tyler McVicar added two hits for the Phoenix.

Starter Jordan Barrett (0-2) took the loss for Elon, surrendering seven runs on four hits and five walks in just three innings.

Up next: The Seahawks and Phoenix play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday with first-pitch set for 2 p.m.

Home Runs: UNCW – Stupienski (off Barrett in the first inning, none on, two out), Canada (off Barrett in the second inning, one on, one out)

How it happened: The Seahawks built a 7-2 lead through three complete innings as they plated four runs in the third to break open a 3-2 game. Elon starter Jordan Barrett walked four and hit one as UNCW needed just one hit, a two-run single by Stack, to extend the lead to five.

Inside the box score: UNCW plated five runners from third base with less than two out … Seahawk hitter advanced runners in 13 –of-21 opportunities … Both teams struggled with RISP with UNCW going 2-for-8 and Elon, 4-for-15 …UNCW did not record a single out in the outfield … Lefthanded batters were just 1-for-12 against Foster.

Notes: Nick Feight extended his hitting streak to 14 games, but saw his RBI streak ended at seven consecutive games … Daniel Stack posted his first career three-hit game and now has a career-long eight-game hitting streak … Ryan Foster has allowed just three earned runs over his last four starts covering 30 innings of work (0.90 ERA) … Mark Scalf, already the all-time wins leader in CAA play, picked up his 325 conference victory.
