Thorburn, Linkous Have Big Days In 11-4 Win Over VCU



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Robbie Thorburn and Steven Linkous combined for seven hits and five runs scored as UNCW finished off a sweep of the Hughes Bros. Challenge with an 11-4 win over VCU on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 6-0 while the Rams dipped to 3-3. UNCW has scored in double figures in all six games to open the season.

Thorburn banged out four hits, scored three times and knocked in two while Linkous added three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs of his own. Brian Mims continued his hot weekend, driving in three runs on two hits.

Justin Crump (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen in his season debut. Crump struck out two and allowed a run in 2.1 innings of relief.

Jonathan Ebersole (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 2.1 innings of relief.

No hitter in the VCU lineup had more than one hit on the game.

Next up: The Seahawks visit nationally-ranked NC State on Mar. 2 for a 3 p.m. start.

How it happened: After VCU tied it in the fourth at 4-all, UNCW plated two runs, all with two out to take a 6-4 lead. Thorburn ignited the rally with a single and Kennard McDowell followed with a single of his own. Linkous plated Thorburn with a single to left and Mims scored McDowell with the final run with a single. All four hits came in succession.

Inside the box score: UNCW posted six 2-out RBI's on the afternoon and went 7-for-14 with two outs … UNCW's bullpen combined to allow just one 2-out hit and struck out 10 in seven innings of work … Andy Austin added two hits, including a double, off the bench for UNCW … The Seahawks advanced runners in 14-of-25 opportunities.

Notes: Gavin Stupienski extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh inning … Austin Easter struck out three in 1.2 innings, finishing the weekend with five strikeouts … UNCW now leads its all-time series with VCU, 48-34 … UNCW has 79 runs scored this season … Brian Mims hit .700 (7-10) on the weekend while compiling a 1.300 slugging average and a .714 on base average ... Mims scored five times and drove in 10.
