Seahawks Earn Split Against Bucknell and N.C. Central

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by four hits from junior Nella Chamblee, UNCW continued play at the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic by splitting a pair of games against Bucknell and N.C. Central at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who improved to 9-3 on the season, earned a 4-2 victory over N.C. Central in their first game before dropping a 12-4 decision against Bucknell to snap a seven-game win streak.

While Chamblee led the Seahawks by going 4-for-6 at the plate, junior Merritt Wilkinson added three hits with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Freshmen Kali Jones and Hannah Adamczyk each collected a pair of hits and scored a run in the doubleheader.
 Junior Peyton Jordan earned the victory in the circle against N.C. Central by allowing just three hits over four innings without giving up a run. She also recorded three strikeouts while upping her record to 3-1 on the season.  

How It Happened vs. N.C. Central: The Seahawks scored four straight runs, including two in the fifth inning, to take a 4-0 lead they did not relinquish. N.C. Central trimmed the margin to 4-2 by scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings.  

How It Happened vs. Bucknell: The Bison jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening three innings before a four-run fourth inning, including a two-run single by Wilkinson, evened the score at 4-4. But, Bucknell answered with eight unanswered runs, including five in the fifth inning, to end its four-game losing streak.

#SeahawkStats: The Seahawks held N.C. Central to just 2-for-13 with runners on base and 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position … Bucknell was 13-for-35 with runners on base and 8-for-26 with runners in scoring position … The Seahawks combined to hit 7-for-21 with runners on base in the doubleheader … UNCW committed a season-high seven errors in the loss against Bucknell, leading to nine unearned runs … Adamczyk extended her hitting streak to seven straight games before going 0-for-1 against Bucknell … Chamblee has now hit safely in four consecutive games … Jones had her five-game hitting streak snapped against N.C. Central before a 2-for-2 effort against the Bison … Chamblee and Adamczyk have reached base safely in eight consecutive games while Jones has a streak of seven straight contests.

Up Next for the Seahawks: UNCW finishes play at the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic on Sunday with a pair of games. The Seahawks play Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. before facing N.C. Central in the tournament finale at 3 p.m.
