Drexel Holds Off Seahawks for 66-60 Victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Junior guard Jasmine Steele scored a career-high 23 points, but Drexel used a strong effort from beyond the arc to hold off UNCW for a 66-60 Colonial Athletic Association victory at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
The loss dropped the Seahawks' record to 7-17 overall and 3-10 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Dragons ended a two-game losing streak while improving to 13-11 on the season, including a 9-4 mark in league play.
 
Steele, who posted her seventh consecutive double-digit scoring effort, netted 15 of her 23 points in the second half. She made 9 of 18 shots from the floor, including a 2-for-5 effort from long range, and three of four free throws in addition to five rebounds and three assists.
 
Junior forward Jordan Henry added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Seahawks, who shot 46.0 percent from the field, including a 48.1 percent showing after the intermission.
 
Junior guard Jessica Pellechio led three Drexel players in double figures with 14 points after shooting 4-for-11 from the field, including a 3-for-9 performance from three-point range. Junior forward Sarah Curran added 13 points with three rebounds while sophomore forward Kelsi Lidge came off the bench to score 12 points.
 
How It Happened: Curran scored 9 of her 13 points in the first half as the Dragons built a 37-26 advantage and never looked back. Drexel led for nearly 36 minutes and never trailed after allowing the opening basket on a lay-up by sophomore guard Madison Raque.
 
#SeahawkStats: The Dragons have won nine straight games over the Seahawks and hold an 18-8 advantage in the all-time series … Drexel's Denise Dillon coached her 400th game for the Dragons on Sunday … The Seahawks did not commit their first foul until there were 3:23 left in the third quarter … Henry scored 10 or more points for the ninth time this season … It was Henry's first double-digit scoring performance since Jan. 22 at William & Mary … Drexel shot 9-for-27 from three-point range in the game, including a 5-for-14 showing in the first half … The Dragons outrebounded UNCW by a slim 32-31 margin … Senior guard Shatia Cole was limited to just seven points, snapping a streak of 11 consecutive games scoring in double figures … Cole tied her season high with six assists … Raque equaled her career high with eight rebounds, which tied junior forward Jordan Henry for game-high honors … The Seahawks outscored Drexel, 34-29, in the second half.
