WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Redshirt junior forward
Julio Moncada registered his second two-goal game of the season as UNCW remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play with a 3-1 victory over league-leading Hofstra at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Seahawks, who were playing their first home game in three weeks, improved to 7-2-2 overall and 2-0-2 in league play. Meanwhile, Hofstra lost its first CAA game of the season and fell to 8-5-1 overall with a 6-1-0 mark in the league.
UNCW surged out to a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. After junior midfielder
Kalvin Kromer gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, Moncada upped the advantage to 2-0 with 25:00 left in the first half with his sixth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore defender
Matt Morgan.
Freshman
Luke Brown trimmed the margin to 2-1 just under nine minutes into the second half when he collected a loose ball and scored his team-high sixth goal of the season.
But, Moncada answered with 5:59 remaining when he took a centering pass from sophomore midfielder
David Lozano and scored on a 16-yard shot for a 3-1 lead the Seahawks did not relinquish.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Cretens made two saves for the Seahawks, who outshot Hofstra by a 9-7 margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Ashton also tallied two saves for Hofstra, which lost for just the second time in the last eight games.
