FAIRFAX, Virginia – Junior
Madison Melnick (William Mason H.S./Mason, Ohio) scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period as UNCW (3-3-0) earned its second straight win, a 2-1 non-conference victory over UMBC (1-4-1) at George Mason Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Melnick, who netted the second goal of her college career, took a pass from senior
Stephanie Bronson (Leesville H.S./Raleigh, N.C.) and scored on a five-yard shot to secure the Seahawks' third win in the last four matches.
"I am proud of our team for sticking with it today," Coach
Paul Cairney said. "Overall, I felt like we created several good chances in many different ways. UMBC was up to the task and they defended well for long spells. They also have attackers who can score and they made it very difficult.
"I am disappointed in the goal we gave up as I felt we were in the driver's seat at that point," Cairney added. "But, to be able to play in our sixth straight game on the road and win it in a very exciting way is quite rewarding for our team."
After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when junior
Kennedy Ulrich (Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada) scored after receiving passes from seniors
Katrina Guillou (Bishop Ireton H.S./Fort Washington, Md.) and
Sydney Sawaya (Jordan H.S./Durham, N.C.).
The Retrievers tied the match in the 59th minute when junior forward
Destinee Morris (La Plata H.S./La Plata, Md.) tallied her first goal of the season off assists from junior forward
Alexa Quaranta (Perry Hall H.S./Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore forward
Rachel Lyon (Gettysburg Area H.S./Ortanna, Pa.).
Junior goalkeeper
Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made two saves for the Seahawks, who held a commanding 29-7 shot advantage over the Retrievers.
