UNCW Defeats Campbell for 4th Straight Win, 2-0

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Seniors Lindsey Byrne (W.A. Hough H.S./Charlotte, N.C.) and Maddie McCormick (Alexis I. DuPont H.S./Newark, Del.) each scored a goal as UNCW (5-3-0) extended its win streak to four straight games with a 2-0 victory over Campbell (4-3-0) to close out the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who have won five of their last six games, earned the tournament championship for the fourth straight year after earning a goal differential tiebreaker over St. John's, which also finished the weekend with a 2-0-0 record after a 3-0 win over Richmond.
 Byrne gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when she scored her first goal of the season off an assist from junior defender Lauren Nalevaiko (Ardrey Kell H.S./Charlotte, N.C.). With 21:36 remaining, McCormick upped the advantage to 2-0 when she scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway.

Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made two saves to earn her second consecutive shutout as the Seahawks limited Campbell to just four shots.  

#SeahawkStats: UNCW earned its fifth consecutive win over Campbell, including the fourth victory by shutout, and now leads the all-time series by a 9-3-0 margin … After allowing 11 goals in their first two games, the Seahawks have outscored their opponents by a 12-4 margin in the last six contests … UNCW has not allowed a goal in the last 230 minutes, 17 seconds dating back to the second half of its double-overtime win against UMBC on Sept. 6 … McCormick now has 21 goals and 10 assists in her career … Byrne became the fifth different UNCW player to record a game-winning goal this season … The Seahawks are now 4-1-0 this year when scoring two or more goals.

Tournament Tidbits: UNCW has won four of the six tournament titles and has an eight-game win streak in tournament play … McCormick matched the tournament record by scoring three goals in the two games … She has now scored six career goals in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational … The Seahawks are now 9-3-0 all-time in the tournament which started in 2010 … St. John's was making its first-ever appearance in the tournament field.
