Blue Devils Blitz Volleyball In Sweep

DURHAM, North Carolina – After topping North Carolina, the night before, UNCW was unable to carry the momentum over as Duke swept the Seahawks, 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-13), on Saturday in volleyball action at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils, who fell to third-ranked Stanford on Friday, raised their record to 5-3 while the Seahawks dipped to 6-2.

Leah Meyer and Emily Skylar led Duke with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as the Blue Devils out hit UNCW, .285-.055. Jordan Tucker and Alyse Whitaker added nine kills apiece.

The Seahawks held a narrow advantage in blocks, 8-7, but DU held a commanding lead in digs, 70-53, led by Sasha Karelov's 19 digs.

Nicole Lott topped UNCW with seven kills while Lindsay Hartmann had a team-high 16 digs. Up front, Anna Moss paced the Seahawks with five blocks.

Quotable: "Duke came to play today and didn't give us and inch," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "They are a great defensive team so our offense struggled to get kills to fall. I think the team had sparks of greatness today, but couldn't gain any momentum. Overall, this weekend was a tremendous step for our program, regardless of today's outcome."

How it happened: Duke hit .285 for the match with 52 kills in 130 attacks. In the second and third sets, the Blue Devils combined to hit 34-9-88 (.284) while the Seahawks were 8-13-72 (-.069).

Notes:  UNCW dropped to 0-4 all-time against Duke … The loss was UNCW's first in three matches against the ACC … The Seahawks have out blocked their opponents in all eight matches.

Up next: The Seahawks closeout their three-match road swing against NCAA tournament teams from 2014 on Sept. 15, when they play at Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m.
