Virginia Opens Season with 8-0 Win Over Seahawks

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – Led by a goal and three assists from senior forward Makenzy Doniak (Ayala H.S./Chino Hills, Calif.), No. 2 Virginia scored four goals in each half to open its season with an 8-0 victory over UNCW at Klockner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Doniak, a member of the Hermann Trophy Watch List, scored her goal in the second minute and added two assists in the first half as Virginia handed the Seahawks their second straight loss to begin the season.

Junior Meghan Cox (Robert E. Lee H.S./Springfield, Va.) added three goals for the Cavaliers while junior midfielder Alexis Shaffer (Green Hope H.S./Cary, N.C.) contributed a goal with an assist.

UNCW junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made four saves in 65 minutes while junior Liisa Rahkola (Oulu, Finland) added three saves in the final 25 minutes.

#SeahawkStats: The Cavaliers are the highest-ranked opponent UNCW has ever faced in the program's history … Prior to Sunday, the highest-ranked opponent the Seahawks faced was third-ranked Wake Forest on Aug. 19, 2012 … The eight goals scored by Virginia are the most by an UNCW opponent since James Madison had 11 goals against the Seahawks on Oct. 22, 1995 … Virginia won its 33rd consecutive home match.

Up Next for the Seahawks: UNCW continues its six-game road trip on Thursday, Aug. 27 by visiting former Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
