ROCK HILL, South Carolina – Senior forward
Nathaniel Goodwin netted three goals in the first half as UNCW finished its exhibition schedule with a 3-2 victory over Winthrop at Eagles Field on Sunday afternoon.
"We got off to a great start and jumped ahead early with two quality goals from Nathaniel and some excellent work from
Ben Fisher," Coach
Aidan Heaney said. "The game was changed when Winthrop got the penalty kick goal, but I was very happy with our response.
"We were disappointed to allow a goal early in the second half," Heaney added. "But overall, there were some strong performances in what was a really good test for us from an experienced Winthrop side."
After scoring the game-winning goal in the Seahawks' 2-1 exhibition win over Coastal Carolina last Saturday, Goodwin wasted little time giving UNCW a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the first eight minutes. He tallied his first goal just 90 seconds into the first half off a feed from Fisher before adding a second goal off another Fisher assist in the eighth minute.
The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 12th minute when
Jordi Lluch converted a penalty kick. But, Goodwin answered with his third goal of the match in the 29th minute off assists from freshman
Joel Bylander and senior
Colin Bonner.
Winthrop narrowed the margin to 3-2 less than two minutes into the second half on a goal by
Charles Coulson, but the Eagles were unable to get any closer.
What's Ahead for the Seahawks: UNCW will open its regular season on Friday, Aug. 28 by hosting High Point in a non-conference match at the UNCW Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
