North Carolina Edges UNCW in Exhibition, 2-1

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior midfielder Joanna Boyles (Sanderson H.S./Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore midfielder Annie Kingman (Saint Francis H.S./Woodside, Calif.) each scored a goal in the first half to lead the University of North Carolina to a 2-1 exhibition victory over UNCW at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Boyles gave UNC an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when she headed in a corner kick from senior forward Alexa Newfield (St. Pius X Catholic H.S./Decatur, Ga.).

With 1:21 remaining in the first half, Kingman upped the advantage to 2-0 when she collected a loose ball and scored on an 18-yard shot to the far post.

Just five minutes into the second half, senior forward Maddie McCormick (Alexis I. DuPont H.S./Newark, Del.) narrowed the gap to 2-1 when she scored off a crossing pass from sophomore forward Serenity Waters (East Coweta H.S./Sharpsburg, Ga.).

Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman Charter School/Huntersville, N.C.) made two saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a narrow 16-13 margin.

UNCW opens its regular season schedule on Friday, Aug. 21 by traveling to Appalachian State for a 4 p.m. contest. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels begin their regular season slate on Aug. 21 by hosting Weber State as part of the Nike Carolina Classic.
