Diamond Hawks Rally Late Again For 3-2 Win Over NC Central

DURHAM, North Carolina – Kennard McDowell's two-run double in the top of the eighth propelled UNCW to a 3-2 win over NC Central on Tuesday at the Durham Athletic Park.

The Seahawks improved to 22-8 overall and 3-4 on the road with the win. The Eagles, meanwhile, dropped to 15-17 with the home loss.

Reliever Austin Magestro (4-2) earned the win while Jordan Ramsey recorded his seventh save of the season. Ramsey entered the game in the eighth, loaded the bases with an intentional walk, but closed out the inning with a ground ball double play.

UNCW starter Evan Phillips didn't figure in the decision despite an impressive outing. The righthander went six-plus innings, allowed two runs on four hits and two walks and struck out a career-high 10.

Nick Feight was the only Seahawk with two hits in the game.

Andrew Morgan (2-4) took the loss while Mitch McGarry had two hits for NCCU.

Up next: The Seahawks host NC State on Wednesday with first-pitch set for 6 p.m.

How it happened: UNCW plated three runs in the eighth inning as McDowell's double with runners on the corners gave UNCW a 3-2 lead. Brian Mims hit a ground ball to second base one batter earlier that NCCU was unable to convert into a double play as a run scored to make it 2-1.

Inside the box score: Both the tying and winning runs came with two outs … UNCW was 1-for-10 with two outs while NCCU went 0-for-8 … Evan Phillips allowed just one leadoff hitter to reach safely … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-9 innings.

Notes: UNCW improved to 6-2 in one-run games with their sixth consecutive one-run win … The Seahawks lead the all-time series, 7-0 … UNCW is 5-7 when trailing after seven innings … The Seahawks snapped a streak of seven games with an error … Zach Shields pushed his career-long on base streak to seven games … Gavin Stupienski returned to action as a pinch hitter in the eighth after missing six games with an illness.
