Seahawks Drop Series Finale Against Drexel With 4-1 Setback

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Taylor Lee (Massaponax H.S./Fredericksburg, Va.) allowed one run and scattered five hits as Drexel claimed the final game of its Colonial Athletic Association series against UNCW with a 4-1 victory over the Seahawks at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Dragons, who have won three of their last four games, improved to 12-12 overall and 3-5 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Seahawks dropped to 15-16 overall and 2-7 in the CAA after suffering their fourth loss in the last five games.

Lee, who upped her record to 9-7, earned her second win of the weekend after helping Drexel post a 6-2 triumph in the series opener on Saturday. In the series finale, she posted one strikeout and did not walk a batter while posting her 13th complete game of the season.

Freshman Alyssa Williamson (Scarbrough H.S./Scarbrough, Maine) drove in a pair of runs for the Dragons with a two-run single in the sixth inning while three different players posted a pair of hits.

Freshman Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) accounted for the Seahawks' lone run when she hit the first home run of her college career, a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. She took the loss in the circle after allowing three runs in five innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

Sophomore Claudia Spinelli (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) tallied a pair of hits for the Seahawks, extending her hitting streak to five games in a row.

How It Happened: Drexel took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as senior outfielder Liana Newton (Cinnaminson H.S./Cinnaminson, N.J.) scored on a throwing error. Davis tied the game at 1-1 with her first career home run in the fourth inning before the Dragons answered by scoring a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.

Inside the Box Score: Lee retired the final 11 hitters she faced … Drexel was 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position … However, the Dragons were 13-for-25 in advancement opportunities, but left 11 runners on base … Davis was called for an illegal pitch in the second inning.

Game Notes: Drexel has won four of its last six games against the Seahawks in Wilmington … Spinelli has tallied nine hits in her last five games, including six hits in three games against Drexel this weekend … Davis has also hit safely in four straight games and has a seven-game streak of reaching base safely … Junior shortstop Paula Ueno (Sao Paolo, Brazil) extended her hitting streak to six straight games while reaching base for the 15th game in a row for the Dragons … After hitting just four home runs in their first 27 games, the Seahawks have blasted three home runs in the last four games … UNCW is now 13-10 at home this season with three home games remaining.

What's Ahead for UNCW: UNCW embarks on a seven-game road trip starting with a doubleheader at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. The first game between the Seahawks and the Chanticleers is slated for 4:00 p.m.
