Charleston Outlasts Seahawks in Series Opener, 3-1

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Sophomore pitcher Samantha Martin (Lawton Chiles H.S./Tallahassee, Fla.) allowed just one run on four hits as College of Charleston opened a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series against UNCW with a 3-1 victory over the Seahawks at Patriots Point on Saturday evening.

The Cougars, who earned their second win in the last three games, improved to 23-25 overall and 6-10 in the CAA. UNCW dropped to 18-23 overall and 4-12 in the CAA after suffering its second loss in the last three contests.

Martin, who improved to 10-10 on the season, posted a pair of strikeouts en route to her eighth complete game of the season.

Junior outfielder Brittanne Gasser (Dominion H.S./Sterling, Va.) accounted for the Seahawks' lone run when she led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field.

Sophomore Peyton Jordan (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits. Jordan, who is now 7-6 on the season, recorded two strikeouts with just one walk.

How It Happened: Junior outfielder Rebecca Mueller (Del Campo H.S./Fair Oaks, Calif.) gave Charleston a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field. The Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning before Gasser ended the shutout bid in the seventh inning.

Inside the Box Score: The Seahawks' lead-off hitters reached base safely in four of seven innings … However, UNCW was 1-for-12 with runners on base … Charleston was 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and 5-for-14 in advancement opportunities.

Game Notes: Charleston has now defeated UNCW in 12 consecutive meetings … Sophomore Lauren Moore (The Oakwood School/Farmville, N.C.) has reached base safely in five consecutive games after earning a walk on Saturday … The start of the game was delayed by four hours due to inclement weather.

Up Next for UNCW: The Seahawks will face the Cougars in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
