Stupienski, Barnes Shine As UNCW Sweeps Ivy Champion Columbia With 10-5 Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Gavin Stupienski had three hits, including a home run, and knocked in four runs to back the 4.1 innings of perfect relief from Whitman Barnes as UNCW completed a sweep of defending Ivy League champion Columbia with a 10-5 win on Monday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (12-5) improved to 12-2 at home this season while the Lions dipped to 3-7.

Stupienski's third home run of the season was a three-run shot that highlighted a five-run first inning for the Seahawks. He added a single in the sixth and a RBI double in the eighth to finish a triple shy of the cycle. Corey Dick added two hits, including a two-run double in the second inning as UNCW built a 7-1 lead. Also posting two-hit games for UNCW were Terence Connelly and Kennard McDowell.

Barnes (2-1) earned the win by retiring all 12 batters he faced after taking over in the fifth inning. He finished with three strikeouts during his career-long outing.

CU starter Ryan Marks (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season. Marks was tagged for six runs, three earned, on three hits and four walks in one inning pitched.

Will Savage and Jordan Serena each had two hits for the Lions, who narrowed their deficit to 7-5 in the fifth inning.

Up next: The Seahawks host rival Campbell at 6 p.m. on March 18.

How it happened: UNCW jumped on Marks immediately in the first inning as the first four batters reached base and scored with three coming around on Stupienski's shot to right for a 4-1 lead. UNCW would make it 5-1 later in the frame as Connelly came around to score from second on a single by Zach Canada.

Notes: Stupienski has now reached base safely in 12 consecutive games … Zach Shields was caught stealing for the first time this season, but scored three runs as the top three hitters in the UNCW lineup combined for six runs scored … Five runs in the first inning were a season-high for the Seahawks … Opponents have committed 49 errors in 17 games against UNCW.
