Diamond Hawks Fall To Spartans, 10-4


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCG starting pitcher Ryan Clark struck out eight and allowed one run over seven innings as the Spartans dealt UNCW a 10-4 setback on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Spartans, who improved to 6-9 overall with the win, picked up its first road win of the season while the Seahawks dipped to 10-5.

Clark, the Southern Conference's preseason Pitcher-of-the-Year, allowed just two hits in running his record to 3-1.

Nick Monroe (1-1) took the loss for UNCW, lasting three innings. The righthander allowed five runs on five hits and four walks over a season-low three innings.

Leading UNCG at the plate was the bottom of the order as Jake Hall (2-for-3), Ryne Sigmond (2-for-3) and Davin Ruiz (3-for-5) combined for seven hits, and seven runs batted in. Hall belted his first home run of the season while Ruiz doubled twice.

 Steven Linkous was the only Seahawk with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5.

Up next: The Seahawks and Spartans will play at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

How it happened: UNCG roughed up Monroe in the first inning with three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. Ruiz doubled in two runs to highlight the Spartans' outburst.

Inside the box score: UNCW went 2-for-9 with RISP and landed its leadoff hitter on base twice … UNCG, meanwhile, had its leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-9 innings … Four UNCG runs were scored by batters who drew walks … Clark held UNCW to 1-of-9 hitting with runners on base.

Notes: The loss was UNCW's second at home as it's now 10-2 at Brooks Field … No UNCW starter has made it into the sixth inning this season … Monroe has now walked 17 batters in 22 innings and struck out 20 … UNCW trails the all-time series with UNCG, 12-9 … Linkous tripled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to six games … Gavin Stupienski singled in the fourth to push his on-base streak to 10 straight … Terence Connelly saw hit on-base streak halted at 14 games.
