Seahawks Rally For Split On Final Day Of Seahawk Softball Spring Classic

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Freshman pitcher Sarah Davis (Walter Williams HS/Burlington, N.C.) scattered seven hits over nine innings and delivered the game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh to lift UNCW over North Carolina A&T, 3-2, in nine innings late Sunday in softball action at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks now stand 7-4 after edging the Aggies and falling to Marist, 6-4, earlier in the day in the finale of the five-team Seahawk Softball Spring Classic. Coach Kristy Norton's club finished 4-1 in the weekend tournament and host Norfolk State on Saturday, March 7, in the University Area Hampton Inn Showcase.

In Sunday's entertaining wrapup, North Carolina A&T, 3-9, pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning and the score stood until the Seahawks broke through in the bottom half of the seventh.

Pinch hitter Lauren Moore got things started with a base hit to leftfield and advanced to second when freshman shortstop Kelsey Bryan reached safely on a fielder's choice. Junior first baseman Erin Brown then bunted the runners over and Davis doubled sharply to rightfield to score both runners and send the game into extra innings.

Davis continued to dominate in the circle until the Seahawks staged another rally in the bottom half of the ninth. With the international tie-breaker in effect, Monica Taylor took second and after Jessica Rappe drew a walk, both runners moved over on a wild pitch. Bryan was then hit by a pitch, setting up a game-winning sacrifice fly by Brown to end the game.

Davis allowed two runs on seven hits, walking five and striking out seven, to improve to 4-1 this spring. Junior pitcher Janika May, 1-4, was the tough-luck loser for the Aggies after surrendering just four hits, walking five and fanning one batter.

In the opening game of the day for the Seahawks, Marist used the long ball, plating two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth, to slip past UNCW, 6-4. The Red Foxes, 4-5, got home runs from Rebecca Freeman and Janine Lalli in the uprisings.

Sophomore designated player Claudia Spinelli displayed some power of her own for the Seahawks, belting a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Casey Rowland ripped a double and Darion Roberts cracked a triple for the Seahawks vs. Marist.
