Tribe Rallies Late To Slip Past Seahawks, 56-53

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – William & Mary used a 7-0 spurt with eight minutes remaining to overcome UNCW and take sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 56-53 men's basketball victory over the Seahawks Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

Coupled with Delaware's upset of Northeastern earlier in the day, the Tribe, 15-8 and 9-3, vaulted into a full game lead over the Seahawks and the Huskies. UNCW stands 13-10 and 8-4 and Northeastern is 16-9 and 8-4.

CAA Preseason Player-of-the-Year Marcus Thornton led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 at the free throw line. Senior forward Tom Schalk came off the bench to contribute career-high13 points and five rebounds for the Tribe, which bounced back from an upset loss at the College of Charleston on Wednesday night.

Junior guard Craig Ponder paced the Seahawks with 14 points and senior guard Freddie Jackson had 12 for the Seahawks. Senior forward Cedrick Williams also grabbed 12 rebounds.

After the Seahawks built a 29-26 lead at intermission, UNCW forged out to a 44-40 lead midway through the second half on Jackson's steal and layup with 8:37 remaining before the Tribe reeled seven straight points to seize control.

The slippery Thornton started the rally with a free throw and junior guard Terry Tarpey grabbed a loose ball and raced down the floor for a layup to give the Tribe a 47-44 advantage with 6:38 left on the clock.

The Seahawks answered, however, with a five-point spurt of their own, capped by Ponder's triple with 4:20 left, for a 51-50 edge and still led, 53-52, until Schalk grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback at 1:37 to give the Tribe the lead for good.

Thornton connected on both ends of a bonus situation with 13.4 seconds remaining for a 56-53 Tribe lead, but the Seahawks could not score the equalizer when freshman guard Jordon Talley's long three-ball bounced off the rim.

The Tribe offset 20 turnovers by shooting 50 percent from the field on 22-of-44 field goals. The Seahawks made only 19-of-66 shots for 28.8 percent on the night.

UNCW converted 9-of-35 field goals for 25.7 percent in the first half, but took a 29-26 edge into the break after forcing 16 turnovers by the Tribe.

Senior guard Addison Spruill, UNCW's second leading scorer, was limited to 2-of-4 shooting in the early going when he picked up his second foul with 13:12 remaining in the period.

The Seahawks built their largest lead of the half, 29-23, with 1:38 left in the first period on a pair of Dylan Sherwood free throws before the Tribe closed the gap to 29-26 on a massive dunk by Tarpey with 10 seconds to go before intermission.

The Seahawks continue a three-game home stand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. matchup against the College of Charleston. The Tribe returns home for four of its final six games, beginning with a Wednesday clash against Elon at 7 p.m.
