Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Blue Hens Use Big Second Half To Knock Off Seahawks, 70-59

NEWARK, Delaware – Delaware used a monster second half, shooting 65.2 percent and holding league-leading UNCW without a field goal over the first 9:18 of the period, to upset the Seahawks, 70-59, in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens improved to 8-18 overall and 7-8 in the CAA with the victory and earned a split of the regular season series with the Seahawks. UNCW now stands 15-11 in all games and 10-5 in the CAA, and dropped into a crowded four-way tie for first place in the circuit with three games left to play in the regular season.

UNCW is joined at the top of the league by Northeastern (18-10, 10-5), William & Mary (16-10, 10-5) and James Madison (17-11, 10-5).

"Give Delaware credit, they were the more aggressive team tonight," said UNCW first-year Head Coach Kevin Keatts. "It's tough to get into your press when you're not scoring. We weren't able to get our press going because we weren't doing a good job of scoring the basketball.

"We played a very good first half and didn't get everything right on the defensive end in the second half. We just have to figure things out in a short amount of time."

Sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes was held scoreless in the first meeting between the two teams, but showed up big on Thursday, leading three Blue Hens in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Junior forward Marvin King-Davis added 16 points and a team-best eight rebounds and senior guard Kyle Anderson chipped in 11 markers – all in UD's explosive second half.

Junior guard Craig Ponder paced four Seahawks in double digits with 14 points. Junior forward Dylan Sherwood scored 12 points off the bench on four treys, freshman point guard Jordon Talley contributed 11 and senior guard Freddie Jackson recorded his third career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Delaware, which defeated a CAA leader for the third time in four outings, trailed by 10 points at intermission, but stormed back over the final 20 minutes to overtake the Seahawks and avenge a 74-73 overtime loss in early January back in Wilmington.

Leading 35-25 at the break, the Seahawks did not make a field goal until Talley's bucket from the top of the key with 10:42 left in the game. UNCW missed its first eight field goal attempts and converted just 5-of-24 in the last half. Delaware, meanwhile, opened the second half with a 30-9 blitz to put the Seahawks on their heels.

The Blue Hens took the lead for good with 12:31 left on a baseline jumper by King-Davis and the lead swelled to as many as 14 points, 67-53, on Anderson's three-pointer with 2:40 left in the contest.

The Seahawks were mired in foul trouble most of the night, with two starters – Addison Spruill and Cedrick Williams – fouling out and Talley finishing with four personals. The Blue Hens capitalized by scoring 38 points in the paint and shooting over 60 percent in the second half after making just 37 percent in the first period.

King-Davis scored on a slam dunk with 17:44 left in the first half to give the Blue Hens a quick 7-4 advantage before the Seahawks got untracked.

Talley scored on a steal and layup to key an 11-0 run as the Seahawks made five of their next seven field goal attempts to take control. Sherwood swished the first of three first-half trifectas to help UNCW cruise out to a 15-7 lead.

But the Blue Hens gradually cut into the lead in the middle of the first period and narrowed the deficit to one point on three occasions before the Seahawks took over again late in the opening period.

After Kory Holden scored on a nifty layup with 4:12 showing to close the gap to 24-23, UNCW outscored UD, 11-2, over the final four minutes to build a 35-25 margin – their largest lead of the opening 20 minutes - at the break. Sherwood delivered two more three-pointers in the strong finish and Talley added a layup and two free throws with 26 seconds on the clock en route to eight points in the first half.

The Seahawk complete their two-game swing to the Mid-Atlantic area by visiting SECU Arena on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off vs. Towson. The Blue Hens entertain CAA newcomer Elon on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
