WILMINGTON, N.C. – Nick Monroe and Jordan Ramsey combined to strike out 15 batters as UNCW rolled past Richmond, 7-2, on Friday in the season-opener for both teams at Brooks Field in the second game of the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach.

Monroe (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. He finished with a career-high seven strikeouts.

Ramsey, who was making just his third career relief appearance, struck out a career-high tying eight batters and allowed just one hit over four innings. It was his first career save.

UR starter Ryan Cook (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs, just two earned, over 4.2 innings.

Tyler Beckwith paced the Spider lineup with two hits and had a game-tying bases-loaded single in the top of the fourth.

Offensively, Gavin Stupienski and Corey Dick each had two hits and knocked in two runs while Casey Golden belted a two-run homer in the first inning.

In the first game of the day, Kentucky roughed up Ball State, 11-7, but had to fend off the Cardinals in the later stages of the game.

Up next: The Seahawks host nationally-ranked Ball State on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed via the Seahawk Digital Network (UNCWsports.com). Sunday's games of the Buffalo Wild Wing Battle at the Beach have been canceled and won't be made up.

How it happened: UNCW plated four runs, all with two out in the fifth to break open a 2-all deadlock. Stupienski began the outburst with a two-run single to center and Dick followed with a two-run double to left one batter later.

Inside the box score: UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base in 5-of-8 innings … Five of UNCW's seven runs came with two out … Steven Linkous added a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning … UNCW pitchers held UR hitless (0-10) with two outs … The Spiders advanced runners just twice in 12 opportunities.

Notes: The Seahawks won their seventh straight opening day and avenged their lost opening day loss which was against Richmond in 2008 … Corey Dick extended his hitting streak to four games, dating back to last season … For Golden, it was his fifth career home run … Ryan Foster will make his season debut for UNCW on Saturday against Ball State.
