Volleyball Sweeps Tribe Behind Kline, Powell



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Maddy Kline posted a double-double in her second career start and junior Kristen Powell had a match-high 14 kills as UNCW rolled past William & Mary, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20), in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action on Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks finished off a season-series sweep of the Tribe to improve to 19-6 overall and 10-3 in the CAA. UNCW's 10 wins in conference play ties the program record set last season. W&M, meanwhile, suffered its fifth loss in its last six matches to dip to 9-17 and 3-10.

Kline and Powell were the only players in double figures in kills with Kline posting her first career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Setter Alyssa Desjardins also posted a double-double, her ninth of the season, with a match-high 20 assists and 13 digs. Fellow setter Bella Borgiotti doled out 15 assists and added three kills.

 Defensively for UNCW, Lindsay Hartmann collected a match-high 19 digs, including nine in the second set alone. At the net, Anna Moss, Meredith Peacock and Powell had four blocks apiece.

Dessi Koleva paced W&M with eight kills while the Tribe struggled to a .068 hitting average. Koleva and Sara Zumbach finished with 17 digs apiece.

Up next: The Seahawks host Elon Saturday in a 7 p.m. start. UNCW's three seniors will be honored prior to the match.

How it happened: The Seahawks got out of the gate quickly with a convincing win in set one, limiting W&M to .000 hitting average while posting a .353 hitting average of its own. UNCW, which leads the conference in opponent hitting average, held the Tribe to just 27 kills in 117 attacks.

Notes: The Seahawks have now won six straight matches against the Tribe … The win also ran UNCW's home record to 8-2 … The Seahawks are now 12-2 in sweeps this season … Hartmann moved into fifth on UNCW's all-time digs list with 1,109 digs … UNCW posted an 8-3 advantage in blocks and improved to 37-13 when leading in blocks the last two seasons.
