VolleyHawks Headed To CAA Championship!

UNCW overcame 2-0 match deficit and 13-7 in fifth set to win

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – Junior Alyssa Desjardin's service ace capped an 8-0 run as third-seeded UNCW rallied from a 13-7 deficit to win the fifth set against second-seeded Towson and advance to the Colonial Athletic Association championship for the first time since 1988.

The Seahawks improved to 23-7 while the Tigers, who led the match 2-0 at the break, finished their season with a 26-6 mark. UNCW will face rival College of Charleston, who advanced to the championship game with a five-set win of its own earlier in the day against top-seeded James Madison.

Meredith Peacock hit .484 on the match with 15 kills in 28 attacks and added five blocks. Nicole Lott held match-high honors with 17 kills and finished off a double-double with 10 digs.

Desjardins also notched her team-leading 11th double-double with 27 assists and 20 digs. Lindsay Hartmann held match-high honors with 23 digs and fielded 22 serves without an error. Kristen Powell added 12 kills, three service aces and a pair of digs and blocks.

Hartmann's four aces were a UNCW CAA tournament record as were UNCW's nine, eclipsing the previous mark of seven set last season against Charleston.

Jessica Lewis' 16 kills were a team-high for Towson, which placed four in double digits. Haley Pa'akaula, Jocelyn Kuilan and Julymar Otero finished with 11 kills apiece. Lewis (16k, 15d) and Pa'akaula (11k, 19d) fashioned double-doubles for Towson.

Up next: UNCW will take on the College of Charleston at noon on Sunday. The match will be televised by the American Sports Network, but not in Wilmington or Charleston. CAA.tv will carry the stream online for free.

How it happened: UNCW battled back from not only a six-point deficit in the final set, but from a 2-0 hole after dropping the first two sets. The Seahawks began the comeback in set three with a resounding 25-14 win and then sent the match to a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth. The 8-0 run in the fifth starter with four Towson errors, a service error and a pair of attack errors sandwiched around a ball-handling error. With the score 13-11 Towson, Peacock recorded a kill and Lott followed with a kill of her own to tie it. Peacock gave UNCW the lead, 14-13, with another kill before Desjardins ended it with a service ace.

Notes: UNCW's 23 wins are the most for the program since 1991 when it went 23-10 … UNCW reached the championship match in 1988, but fell to William & Mary in three to finish 33-3 … UNCW and CofC are the only schools to reach the semifinals in each of the last three seasons … The Seahawks won their first match after trailing 2-0 at the intermission … UNCW improved to 5-2 in five-set matches and 5-1 in neutral site matches … UNCW also has won 15 of its last 20 sets at Sinclair Gymnasium … The Seahawks and CofC split their in-season series, each winning in five sets on its home floor.
