VolleyHawks Fall To Conference-Leading Dukes



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Conference-leading James Madison held off upset-minded UNCW, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19) to stay in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association volleyball standings on Sunday at Hanover Hall.

The Dukes (18-3, 8-0 CAA) won their 11th consecutive outing and snapped a six-match losing streak to the Seahawks. UNCW, meanwhile, had a four-match winning streak snapped and dipped to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the league. The loss also drops UNCW back into a tie for second with Towson in the CAA standings.

 Janey Goodman held match-high honors for JMU with 19 kills while Kate Whitmare added 16. Meghan Niski posted a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs for the Dukes, who outhit UNCW, .274-.151. Also notching a double-double was setter Sarah Patterson with 47 assists and 10 digs.

Nicole Lott was the only Seahawk in double-digit kills with 18.

Defensively, Lindsay Hartmann paced UNCW with 19 digs while Meredith Peacock had eight blocks.

Up next: The Seahawks kickoff a four-match road stretch with a 7 p.m. start at Hofstra on Oct. 23.

How it happened: James Madison fought off a first set loss to sweep the following three sets. Both teams hit above .300 in the opening set, but the Dukes never hit below .200 in the following sets and held UNCW to a high of .154 in the third set.

Notes: James Madison recorded 10 service aces in the match, a season-high for a UNCW opponent … UNCW finished with a 12.5-9 advantage in blocks, but JMU outdug UNCW, 63-56, behind a match-high 20 digs from Taylor Austin.
