Seahawks Win Fourth Straight By Routing Elon, 82-65

WILMINGTON, North Carolina. – Steamrolling UNCW rattled Colonial Athletic Association newcomer Elon early and blew past the Phoenix, 82-65, in the first conference matchup between the two state foes Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks won their fourth in a row to improve to 12-8 overall and 7-2 in the CAA, and share first place with William and Mary following Drexel's win over Northeastern earlier in the night. The Phoenix lost for the fifth time in six outings and dipped to 11-11 and 3-6.

Senior guard Freddie Jackson shook off a pair of gimpy ankles to lead the Seahawks in scoring for the eighth time this season with 15 points on 5-of-8 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Senior forward Cedrick Williams added 14 points and redshirt junior forward Dylan Sherwood came off the bench to score 14 points on 5-of-8 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from long distance.

Freshman guard Elijah Bryant paced the Phoenix with 17 points and had six rebounds and four assists for Matt Matheny's club. Junior guard Tanner Samson also collected 14 points for Elon, which shot a frosty 28.6 percent in the first half before warming up with 52 percent after the break.

"We played as complete a game as we have all year," said Kevin Keatts, UNCW's first-year head coach. "Tonight was one of those nights where we did a very good job on the defensive end. Offensively, we wanted to get the ball to C.J. (Gettys) and Cedrick (Williams) inside because they were going with a smaller lineup. Once they did that, our shots started falling."

The Seahawks, who shot better than 50 percent for the seventh time, built a comfortable cushion at intermission and cruised down the stretch to improve to 7-1 at Trask Coliseum this season. UNCW has now won seven of its last eight contests dating back to a 75-68 verdict at Northeastern on Jan. 5.

In the second half, the Seahawks stayed in front all the way, although Elon did slice the deficit to 16 points, 57-41, with 13:17 showing on Samson's deep trifecta in the left corner. But UNCW answered with seven consecutive points to get the margin back to 63-41 and the Seahawks rolled the rest of the way.

UNCW's largest lead of the contest occurred with 9:39 remaining when rookie playmaker Jordon Talley drove the lane for a layup, was fouled on the play and converted the ensuing free throw to give the Seahawks 73-43 bulge.

After Elon opened the game with a bucket on the right elbow by Bryant, the Seahawks reeled off 13 straight points to ignite the crowd of 4,419. Junior guard Craig Ponder kick started the spurt with a pair of free throws and a monster slam by sophomore center C.J. Gettys with just over 15 minutes left in the first period staked UNCW to an early 13-2 cushion.

The Seahawks remained in control the rest of the half and cruised out to a 25-8 margin on Sherwood's second triple of half at the 9:33 mark. UNCW's then hiked the lead to 21 points with 3:48 remaining when Williams tipped in Jackson's miss to increase the margin to 36-15.

UNCW's largest lead of the first half came with just 33 seconds left when Jackson converted a layup to put the Seahawks ahead, 47-21. UNCW wound up with a 47-23 advantage when the opening period drew to a close.

Elon finished the first half with just six field goals and was limited to 28.6 percent shooting on 6-of-21 from the floor. UNCW, meanwhile, shot a robust 62.1 percent and drained 6-of-9 treys to the 24-point bulge.

The Seahawks take to the road for their next two contests, beginning with a 4 p.m. Saturday date against Drexel in Philadelphia. The Phoenix travel to Boston Saturday to battle Northeastern at 7 p.m.
