Seahawks Remain Unbeaten In Overtime With 58-56 Thriller At Charleston

CHARLESTON, South Carolina. – College basketball coaches like to say winning on the road is "gold." The UNCW men's basketball team went mining for more of that precious ore Wednesday night at TD Arena.

The Seahawks overcame a season-low 25.8 percent shooting by forcing 20 turnovers to turn back rival College of Charleston, 58-56, in overtime to remain near the top of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season standings. The clutch road win kept UNCW perfect in three sudden death games this season.

UNCW, the surprise team of the CAA, won its second straight and fifth in six games to improve to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in the loop. CofC lost for the 10th time in its last 11 outings and dropped to 6-14 and 1-6.

Senior guard Addison Spruill, the reigning CAA Player-of-the-Week, notched his third career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for UNCW. He shared team scoring honors with freshman playmaker Jordon Talley while redshirt junior guard Craig Ponder chipped in 10 points.

The Cougars featured two players with double-doubles. Sophomore guard Canyon Barry, son of former NBA great Rick Barry, finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Adjehi Baru collected 11 points and 12 boards.

"We settled for jump shots in the first half," said Kevin Keatts, UNCW's first-year head coach. "Charleston is a very good defensive team. To be a championship team, you have to win all types of games. We won it tonight with free throw shooting and defense.

"Our press was as good as it's been all year long. We forced 20 turnovers with 10 steals and I was happy with our pressure. Our conditioning kicked in during the overtime period."

Charleston led by as many as nine points in the game and seven points in the second half before the Seahawks finally caught the Cougars down the stretch and prevailed in the overtime period. UNCW outscored Charleston, 6-4, in the extra session to nail down its second straight overtime win over Charleston before 3,013 Cougar faithful.

UNCW scored the first four points of the extra period on a bucket underneath by Cedrick Williams and a spinning layup by Spruill for a 56-52 advantage with 2:37 left to play. But the Cougars wouldn't go away and a pair of free throws by reserve guard Evan Bailey sliced the lead to 57-56 with 41 seconds on the clock.

Charleston had a chance to pull the game out when Jackson missed two free throws with 9.6 seconds left, but Joe Chealey's floater in the lane was swatted away by Williams with 1.3 seconds on the clock and Jackson later sank a free throw to complete the scoring.

In the second half, Charleston was still in front, 34-27, when the Seahawks reeled off eight unanswered points to forge ahead, 35-34, at the 12-minute mark.

The Cougars led, 52-50, following Barry's dunk with three minutes left in regulation, but Jackson made a steal near midcourt, fed the ball to Talley and the Richmond native connected on a driving layup to knot the score. Talley later missed a long triple from the right wing at the buzzer that would have ended the see-saw battle in regulation.

CofC capitalized on cold shooting by the Seahawks to grab a 27-20 lead at intermission. The Seahawks shot a season-low 22.6 percent on 7-of-31 in the opening 20 minutes, missing 17 of their last 20 shots in the period.

After the Cougars jumped out to a 7-4 lead on a jumper on the left elbow by Chealey at the 14:48 mark of the first half, Talley gave the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 9-7, with a pair of free throws with 14:12 left.

The Cougars regained the lead for good on a free throw before closing out the half with a seven-point run, capped by Terrence O'Donohue's triple from the left corner with one second remaining that gave the Cougars a 27-20 advantage at the break.

The Seahawks return to Trask Coliseum on Saturday to open a two-game homestand with an 8 p.m. tip-off against Towson. The Cougars begin a three-game road trip at Drexel on Saturday at Noon.
