BOSTON – Led by a season-high 16 points from senior forward
Sarah Myatt (Southern Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.), the Seahawks had four players score in double figures for the third time this season against Northeastern University on Friday night. However, the Huskies (4-11, 1-4) used a balanced scoring attack to hold off UNCW en route to a 73-64 Colonial Athletic Association victory at the Cabot Center.
Junior forward
Samantha DeFreese (Berkshire School/Bergenfield, N.J.) scored 21 points and added seven rebounds to lead the Huskies to the victory, which ended a five-game losing streak while handing the Seahawks their second loss in a row.
After a slow start, the Huskies used seven points from DeFreese to build a 16-6 advantage with 11:32 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore guard
Jasmine Steele (Midfield H.S./Birmingham, Ala.) narrowed the margin to 16-12 with a pair of three-point field goals before the Huskies used a 9-3 spurt to extend the lead to 25-16 with 8:04 remaining in the opening stanza.
Northeastern upped the margin to 31-18 with 4:27 left before the Seahawks tallied 11 of the final 13 points, including a pair of three-point field goals by Steele, to trim the deficit to 33-29 at the intermission.
After the Huskies extended the margin to 44-34 in the first four minutes of the second half, the Seahawks scored 13 of the next 17 points to narrow the gap to 48-47 with 10:27 left on a Steele jumper.
However, Northeastern scored 8 of the next 10 points, including six points from DeFreese, to take a 56-49 lead they did not relinquish.
In leading the Huskies to the victory, DeFreese made 8 of 12 shots from the floor, including a 2-for-3 effort from three-point range. Meanwhile, senior guard
A'lece Mark (Loomis Chaffee Academy/Springfield, Mass.) added a "double double" by scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds. Junior guard
Kazzidy Stewart (Lanham, Md.) contributed 16 points with five rebounds.
Myatt, who posted her second double-digit scoring effort of the season, made 8 of 13 shots from the floor while grabbing five rebounds. Steele added a season-high 15 points after making five of nine shots from the floor, including a four-for-seven effort from three-point range.
Senior guard
Kelva Atkins (Granville Central H.S./Stem, N.C.) contributed 12 points with three assists and three steals while sophomore guard
Brie Mobley (Winter Haven H.S./Winter Haven H.S.) came off the bench to score 11 points with six rebounds.
