Foster Scores But Seahawks Fall To Winthrop, 2-1

WILMINGTON, North CarolinaKellen Foster notched his first career goal, but Winthrop made a pair of first half goals stand as the Eagles clipped UNCW, 2-1, at the UNCW Courtyard Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach Classic on Sunday.

The Eagles improved to 3-1 with the road win while the Seahawks dipped to 2-1-1 in their final home game before kicking off a three-game road swing with South Carolina on Sept. 12.

Winthrop came out strong in the first half and scored a pair of goals in the first 27 minutes for a 2-0 lead.

Magnus Thorsson scored the first goal in a scramble in front of the goal at the 23:31 mark. The play stated with a free kick in the middle of the field and Thorsson drove home a loose ball.

Pol Sole made it a 2-0 Winthrop advantage less than four minutes later when he received a cross at the top of the penalty area, tapped it over his shoulder and sent a shot inside the right post.

Following the goal, UNCW would have a player sent off with a red card and be forced to play the rest of the game down a man.

Foster narrowed UNCW's deficit to 2-1 with his first career goal off a slick give-and-go with Daniel Escobar just before halftime.

Both sides then locked into a defensive tilt in the second half, totaling just six shots, each taking three.

Winthrop reserve goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar came on in the 14th minute and made three saves for the Eagles.

The Seahawks open a three-game road swing in Columbia, S.C., with a 7 p.m. start against South Carolina. Also on that stretch of games are contests against Campbell (Sept. 16) and Old Dominion (Sept. 20).

Ohio State won the Classic with four points after edging Elon, 1-0, in overtime in the first game of Sunday's schedule.
