Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Tom Riordan

Cardona's Strike In Second Overtime Extends Streak To Five Straight Wins

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.Mateo Cardona's first goal of the season, coming 1:25 into the second overtime, lifted #26 UNCW to a 1-0 win over host William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association season opener for both teams at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday.

The Seahawks won their fifth straight and improved to 7-1-1 on the season. The Tribe, meanwhile, fell to 3-6 with the home loss. The five-game winning streak matches the longest for UNCW since the 2008 season when they Seahawks also ran-off five consecutive wins.

"It was a massive 3 points for us tonight to start CAA play," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "We knew it was going to be a difficult game and it certainly was. William & Mary were well organized and a tough opponent and it was an even game. I thought our bench played a key role tonight and they were able to shoulder the load and give us some freshness. I was delighted for Mateo Cardona to come off the bench and score the winner as he has that capability, but has taken a bit of time to get going this season."

On the winning goal, David Sizemore grabbed a turnover and found Cardona opener for the game-winner. Cardona received the pass on the right side and slid his game winning shot past charging W&M goalkeeper Bennett Jones and into the right corner of the goal.

UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin made two saves in recording his third shutout of the season. Jones finished with three saves to his credit.

The Seahawks finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal. UNCW also owned a 13-2 lead in corner kicks.

"The players continue to show their character, determination, and belief. That is what it took to get the 3 points tonight."

UP NEXT: The Seahawks open a three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. kickoff against nationally-ranked UNC Chapel Hill at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

NOTES: The Seahawks won their fourth game in the all-time series against William & Mary with three of those wins coming in Williamsburg … UNCW improved to 3-0-1 in overtime this season … The Seahawks avenged a 6-3 defeat to the Tribe in last year's CAA tournament semifinals … UNCW has outscored the Tribe, 8-1, in Williamsburg since 2008, a stretch covering four games … UNCW is now 4-0 on the road this season.
