UNCW Tops Camels In Slugfest For 5th Straight Win

UNCW's Owney collects career-high 34 digs, ranks second on UNCW single-match list

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Fueled by 19 kills from senior Morgan Kline and a career-high 34 digs from sophomore Morgan Owney, UNCW edged rival Campbell, 3-2, on Wednesday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks raised their record to 7-1 with the non-conference win while the Camels dipped to 3-5 with the road setback. UNCW has now won its last five matches while CU has dropped its last five outings.

For Kline, she was one off tying her career-high of 20 kills and finished with a double-double after recording 18 digs. The Seahawks out hit CU, .223-.126, had saw Leah Gagliardi and Kristen Powell chalk up 13 kills apiece.

Owney paced the Seahawks with a career-high 34 digs, which ranked her second all-time on UNCW's single-match list during the rally scoring era. Owney added a career-high six assists and had three aces.

The two teams split the first two sets and UNCW jumped in front with a 25-17 win in the third set. With the Seahawks leading 24-22, Campbell rallied for a 28-26 win to force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, UNCW stormed out of the gates and grabbed an 8-4 lead as teams switched ends of the court. Kline pushed that lead to 13-6 with an ace, her second of the match.

Katelyn Layden led the CU offense with 12 kills while Jenny Tait and Jessica Groen added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Tair hit .409 on the evening, going 11-2-22.

Up next: The Seahawks will open the Wildcat Classic in Davidson against the host Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday.
