Bonner Sends Seahawks Home Victors With OT Winner

WILMINGTON, North CarolinaColin Bonner's header for a goal in the 106th minute lifted UNCW to a 2-1 win over in-state rival UNCG on Monday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks moved to 2-0 with the win to open the season while the Spartans dropped to 0-2.

On the game-winning goal, Jose Garcia gained control of the ball on the right flank and sent a long serve into the top of the penalty area. Bonner was able to use every bit of his 6-4 frame to beat his defender and send a header under the crossbar and inside the right goal post to end the contest.

Also notching a goal for the Seahawks was David Sizemore in the 22nd minute. UNCG committed a foul and Sizemore stepped up to take the free kick and sent a curling shot that tucked itself inside the left goal post and past the diving UNCG goalkeeper.
UNCW held the lead until Tommi Gardarsson drew the Spartans even with a penalty kick goal in the 57th minute. The foul was committed when a corner kick from the rightside caromed off a Seahawk defender's arm for the spot foul.

UNCW's Sean Melvin finished with four saves for his second win of the season while Davis Griffin recorded five saves for the Spartans.

UNCW held an 18-15 advantage in shots and 10-5 lead in corner kicks.

The Seahawks continue their three-game homestand on Friday when they host Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. The game is part of the Courtyard Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach Classic with the schedule beginning earlier that day with Elon and Winthrop playing at 5 p.m.
