Seahawks Explode Past 49ers In Women's Soccer, 4-2

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's soccer team erupted for four unanswered goals in the first half to stun visiting UNC Charlotte en route to a 4-2 throttling of the 49ers Sunday in college women's soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Coach Paul Cairney's club won its second straight to even its regular season ledger at 2-2. UNC Charlotte dipped to 1-2 after losing its second straight outing following a season-opening win at UNC Greensboro.

The Seahawks doubled their season scoring total in the first half alone early Sunday in an impressive offensive performance under sunny skies and a slight breeze.

After UNCC's Shelby Hicks staked the 49ers to an early 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest, junior striker Maddie McCormick of UNCW evened the score when she took a pass in the middle, cut around a defender and rifled a shot between the legs of 49ers goalkeeper Annika McHenry at 7:38.

Freshman midfielder Serenity Waters then gave the Seahawks the lead for good with her first collegiate goal. The rookie from Sharpsburg, Ga., took a cross from Mindy Farmer and headed the ball into the net at 19:05 to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.

The Seahawks hiked the score to 3-1 at 25:08 behind the tandem of Katrina Guillou and Morgan Leyble. Guillou notched her third goal of the campaign when she took a long pass from Leyble and one-touched the ball past McHenry for UNCW's third score.

UNCW tacked on yet another tally before intermission when senior midfielder Allye Mertes headed in a pass from Guillou at 36:29.

The 49ers completed the scoring at 85:30 on an Alex Meyers header off a free kick from 35 yards away with time winding down.

The Seahawks travel to Blacksburg, Va., next weekend to participate in the Virginia Tech Tournament. UNCW faces Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. and then takes on the host Hokies on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. The 49ers, meanwhile, visit Liberty on Thursday, Sept. 4, for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
