Bobcats Rally In Second Half To Down Seahawks In Athens, 72-53

ATHENS, Ohio – Senior forward Maurice Ndour scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as Ohio rallied for a 72-53 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting UNCW Tuesday night at the OU Convocation Center.

The Bobcats improved to 5-6 with their fifth win in six career meetings with UNCW. The Seahawks dropped their third in a row and own an identical 5-6 mark.

Ndour, a 6-9, 200-pound transfer from Monroe College, went 9-for-16 from the floor and added a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line to anchor four of Ohio's five starters in double figures. The native of Mbour, Senegal, also snared 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double in 11 games.

Senior point guard Javarez Willis added 12 points and sophomore forward Antonio Campbell and freshman guard Mike Laster chipped in 11 apiece for the Bobcats, who erased an early eight-point deficit by storming back in the final 20 minutes.

Junior guard Addison Spruill paced UNCW with 16 points on 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe. Redshirt junior playmaker Craig Ponder added 13 points, while redshirt sophomore center C.J. Gettys scored six points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for the Seahawks.

In their final non-conference test of the season, the Seahawks jumped out early on the Bobcats and led by eight points just three minutes into the contest before holding a four-point lead at the break. Ohio, however, held UNCW to a frosty 6-of-35 shooting after intermission and outscored the Seahawks, 42-19, in the final period for the come-from-behind win.

Ohio trailed at halftime, 34-30, but scored the first nine points of the final period. The Bobcats took their first lead of the game, 37-34, on the first of two Antonio Campbell three-pointers and capped the spurt at 17:25 on Ndour's putback that extended the score to 39-34.

The Seahawks rallied to knot the game at 39-all on a conventional three-point play by Spruill and still trailed by just one point, 42-41, with just under 15 minutes remaining before the Bobcats capitalized on a cold spurt by UNCW to reel off 16 straight points and break the game open.

Ndour kick started the spurt with a jumper in the paint at 13:40 and capped the rally with a putback and free throw at 7:20 as Ohio bolted out to a 58-41 advantage. The Bobcats later posted their largest lead of the game, 72-51, on two free throws by reserve Drew Crabtree with five seconds left.

The slippery Ponder turned in a strong first half to help the Seahawks grab a 34-30 edge at intermission. The Bluefield, W.Va., product made 4-of-7 shots and drained all three of his trey attempts for 11 points as the Seahawks shot 48.3 percent in the opening frame.

Ponder opened the game with a deep three-ball on the right side and knocked down a shot on the left wing to give the Seahawks their largest lead of the first half, 10-2, at 16:59.

Ohio closed to within three points, 23-20, when Ndour converted his second straight bucket on a shot along the right baseline at the 5:40 mark.

The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first half before OU's Ryan Taylor dropped in a shot in the paint with 20 seconds left to bring the score to 34-30 at the break.

The Seahawks next make their Colonial Athletic Association debut on Saturday when Hofstra visits Trask Coliseum for a 2 p.m. tip-off. The Bobcats are idle until Jan. 7 when Northern Illinois comes to the Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. start.
