Camels Slip Past Seahawks In 100th Meeting, 69-63

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Reserve guard Troy Harper connected on two key baskets in the final 1:34 and three Campbell players scored 15 points apiece as the Camels edged UNCW, 69-63,  in the 100th meeting between the two state rivals Tuesday at the John W. Pope, Jr., Convocation Center.

The Camels shot 54.2 percent – a season high for UNCW opponents – and won their third straight game to even their record at 6-6 on the season. UNCW remained winless in three tries at the Pope Center and carries a 5-4 record into the Christmas break.

"This was our worst defensive output all year," said Kevin Keatts, UNCW's first-year coach, "and that was very disappointing to me. I just don't think we defended well. We're a much better defensive team than we showed tonight. Give Campbell credit…they did a good job of hitting shots down the stretch."

Junior center D.J. Mason, senior forward Reco McCarter and senior guard Andrew Ryan anchored Campbell's balanced attack with 15 points apiece. The Camels converted 26-of-48 shots, including 61.9 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

Junior forward Dylan Sherwood came off the bench to pace four Seahawks in double digits with 12 points. Senior guard Addison Spruill contributed 11 points while junior guard Craig Ponder and freshman guard Jordon Talley had 10 points each.

After battling to a 35-all draw in the first half, the game still hung in the balance when the Seahawks committed a turnover and Harper capitalized with a back-breaking three-pointer with 1:34 remaining to propel the Camels to a 64-58 advantage.

Talley responded for UNCW, however, with a big triple of his own at 1:14, but Ryan scored on an uncontested layup at the one-minute mark to get the lead back to 66-61. Harper then sealed the game with a 13-footer in front of the Campbell bench with 23.8 seconds showing to give the Camels a 68-63 margin before McCarter's game-ending free throw in the final seconds.

Campbell finished the game shooting 54.2 percent, the highest percentage by a UNCW opponent this season, topping Old Dominion's 47.3 mark in the season opener back on Nov. 15. UNCW wound up hitting 41.8 percent on 23-of-55 from the floor, but went 4-of-15 from long distance and committed 16 turnovers.

Led by sophomore forward Chuck Ogbodo's career high-tying nine rebounds, the Seahawks dominated the boards by a wide 37-23 margin, with 12 second-chance points.

The two teams fought to a 35-all deadlock through the first 20 minutes after four ties and five lead changes.

The Camels grabbed an early advantage after making six of their first 11 field goal attempts and built a 15-6 cushion – their largest lead of the period - at 12:09 on Ryan's first triple of the contest.

UNCW closed the gap with an 11-3 spurt and a three-pointer by Sherwood from the top of the key brought the Seahawks within 18-17 with 8:37 left in the opening stanza.

Campbell, which shot 61.9 percent in the first half, got the margin back to 26-19 until UNCW reeled off nine unanswered points to forge ahead, 28-26. Four consecutive points by Spruill helped UNCW to a two-point edge at 3:50.

The Camels finished the first half by scoring 20 points in the paint and 12 off fast break opportunities. UNCW, meanwhile, cashed in at the charity stripe, converting 8-of-9 attempts to offset a 1-of-6 aim from deep.

The Seahawks break briefly for the Christmas holiday before traveling to the upper Midwest for a Saturday clash with Big Ten Conference member Minnesota. Tip-off for the game at historic Williams Arena is 1 p.m. EST.

The Camels travel to Samford on Dec. 28 for their next game, a 1 p.m. start.
