Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Seahawks Use Balanced Attack To Cruise Past Catawba

WILMINGTON, North Carolina  - Freshman guard Malik Pugh led six players in double figures with 20 points in his first collegiate appearance to power UNCW past NCAA Division II Catawba, 97-68, for its 27th consecutive men's basketball exhibition victory Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks open the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 15, with a 7 p.m. matchup against former Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va.

UNCW, which shot 50 percent from the floor, hiked its exhibition record to 44-5 by turning back the pesky Indians with a big second half. It was the fourth straight exhibition game that the Seahawks have broken the 90-point plateau.

Pugh, from Dyersburg, Tenn., anchored UNCW's balanced attack with his game-high total on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-8 at the free throw line. Senior forward Cedrick Williams poured in 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, senior guard Freddie Jackson and sophomore center C.J. Gettys chipped in 14 points apiece and junior guard Craig Ponder and freshman playmaker Jordon Talley added 10 points each.

Sophomore guard Rakeen Brown paced four Catawba players in double digits with 13 points. Rookie forward Jerrin Morrison had a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

UNCW, making its first public appearance under first-year coach Kevin Keatts, forged ahead 45-43 at halftime behind 12 points and 10 boards from Williams and used a decisive spurt in the second period to gain separation from the Indians of the South Atlantic Conference.

Leading 51-50, UNCW went on a 10-2 run behind six straight points from Taylor and a pair of free throws by Williams staked the Seahawks to a 61-52 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining.

The Seahawks pushed the lead to as many as 29 points, 97-68, when walk-on reserve Kevin Hickson dropped in the first of two free throws with 52 seconds left to play.

Catawba hung close early in the contest and forged ahead, 25-22, with just over eight minutes left in the first half on a triple by sophomore forward Dominique Henderson in front of the Seahawk bench.

But Ponder reeled off a string of eight unanswered points to put the Seahawks in front, 30-25, before carrying the three-point margin into the break.
