Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wildcats Maul Seahawks In Post-Thanksgiving Clash

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – Davidson offset a cold shooting day of its own by holding UNCW to 30.4 percent from the floor and forcing 20 turnovers in a 72-49 post-Thanksgiving men's basketball victory over the Seahawks early Saturday at Belk Arena.

The Wildcats pushed their record to 4-1 with their third straight win over their state rivals. The Seahawks had a two-game winning streak snapped and wrapped up their season-opening four-game road trip with an even 2-2 mark.

"We just didn't have a good offensive day," said first-year UNCW Head Coach Kevin Keatts. "We have to do more things to get involved. My hat's off to Davidson, they have a very good basketball team.

"I just didn't think we were there offensively in the same way we've been in the previous three games. We didn't have it offensively. I'm never happy with a loss and there are certainly some things we can work on and clean up. We'll learn from this game and move on."

Freshman forward Peyton Aldridge scored 17 points and sophomore guard Jake Gibbs chipped in 13 for the Wildcats, who managed just 34.3 percent shooting. Davidson built a 41-24 cushion at intermission and refused to let the Seahawks back in the game in the final 20 minutes.

Seniors Addison Spruill and Cedrick Williams each collected double-doubles for the Seahawks. Spruill shared game-high honors with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Williams recorded his second straight and sixth career double-double with 15 points and 12 boards.

UNCW connected on just 8-of-28 overall in the first half, including 1-of-6 from long range, as Davidson opened up a 41-24 lead at the break and cruised down the stretch.

The Seahawks tried to make things interesting early in the second half, chopping the deficit to 13 points, before the Wildcats poured it on again. Leading 46-27 with just over 18 minutes remaining, Davidson watched as Spruill ignited an 8-2 surge that helped the Seahawks close within, 48-35, at 16:09.

But Aldridge responded with a layup and junior guard Brian Sullivan drained a long trey at the top of the key to get the margin back to 53-35 and the Seahawks could get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Davidson's largest advantage in the contest came  with 5:55 left when reserve guard Jordan Barham reeled off six straight points to put the Wildcats in front, 63-39.

The Wildcats stymied junior guard Craig Ponder, who entered the game as UNCW's co-leader in scoring at 16.7 points per game. Ponder wound up going scoreless for the first time since Jan., 11, 2014, when he missed all seven of his field goal attempts, including three from long range.

Davidson led early, 7-2, on a Jake Belford three-pointer before extending the margin to 14-8 when Jordan Barham made a driving layup and Williams picked up his second foul at 12:03.

Spruill answered with a triple along the right wing, but the Wildcats reeled off seven straight points and the lead swelled to 21-11 on Andrew McAuliffe's soft hook in the paint with 8:43 remaining in the period.

Davidson pushed its lead to as many as 19 points in the first half when Sullivan swished a long trey in front of the Seahawk bench for a 41-22 cushion with 1:42 showing.

The Seahawks return to Trask Coliseum for their home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when NAIA member St. Andrews visits for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Davidson hosts cross-county rival Charlotte in the annual Battle for the Hornets' Trophy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
