Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Seahawks Ride Waters To 2-0 CAA Win Over Phoenix

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman midfielder Serenity Waters broke open a close game with two second-half goals to spark the UNCW women's soccer team past state rival Elon, 2-0, in the first Colonial Athletic Association matchup between the two teams Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks snapped a three-game losing streak to even their record at 6-6-1 and stand 1-3-0 in the CAA. The Phoenix, who joined the 10-team conference this season, own a 4-8-0 and 0-4-0 mark.

Waters, a newcomer from Sharpsburg, Ga., returned to the Seahawks after missing Friday night's game vs. William & Mary for personal reasons and responded with goals in the 52nd and 67th minutes as the Seahawks picked up three crucial points in the CAA standings.

After the two clubs battled to a stalemate in the opening 45 minutes, Waters snuck behind the Elon defense and connected on a chip shot from 15 yards out at 51:49 to give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.

The slippery Waters then added an insurance goal at 66:23 when she gathered in a short pass from Kennedy Ulrich and dumped a shot inside the left post for her sixth goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Liisa Rahkola recorded the shutout for the Seahawks, making seven saves for her first solo shutout of the campaign.

UNCW heads back on the road on Friday, Oct. 10, when the Seahawks take on Towson in a 3 p.m. match. Elon returns home for another CAA test against Drexel on Friday at 7 p.m.
