UNCW Rules The Net In 3-1 Dispatching Of Dukes

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a season-high 16.5 blocks and a combined 25 kills from Leah Gagliardi and Kristen Powell to race past visiting James Madison, 3-1, in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action on Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks upped their record to 17-8 overall and 7-4 in the CAA. The Dukes, meanwhile, dropped to 13-11 and 5-6 in the league. The win game UNCW a sweep of the Dukes this season.

With UNCW leading 22-21 in the fourth set, UNCW closed out the set and match with a kill from Sarah Kelly and consecutive blocks for the final two points. The Seahawks trailed by as many as six, 21-15, before scoring 10 of the final 11 points.

Gagliardi tied her season high with 13 kills while Powell added 12. The rightside duo combined to hit .469 (25-2-49) on the night.

Blocking was the highlight of the match for the Seahawks, who eclipsed their previous high of 14 earlier this season. UNCW missed tying the school record of 17 set in 2003 against UNC Asheville and tied last season against JMU.

Meredith Peacock paced the Seahawks with a season-high tying eight blocks. Also with eight blocks on the evening was Kelly, who set a career-high with that mark. She also hit .857 (6-0-7) for the match. Gagliardi tied her own career-high with seven blocks.

James Madison had three with double-digit kills as Lizzy Briones held match-high honors with 16 while Kate Whitmire and Sarah Patterson added 13 and 10, respectively. Patterson finished off a double-double with 39 assists and added seven digs.

Up next: The Seahawks host William & Mary at 1 p.m. on Nov. 2.
