Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars Deal Seahawks 1-0 Loss In Season Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Sarah Cardamone scored the game's only goal in her final home appearance to lift the College of Charleston past UNCW, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer season finale for both teams Sunday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars, who snapped a four-game losing streak to the Seahawks, finished the campaign with a 7-11-1 overall record and 2-6-1 mark in the CAA. The Seahawks wrapped up the year with a 7-9-2 ledger in all games and 2-6-1 scorecard in conference play.

"It's a disappointing way to close out the season," said 19-year UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "We played an excellent second half, but we were playing from behind once again. We certainly created some fantastic scoring opportunities, but could not make the chances count. We will now simply dust this off, bounce back and work hard to get better."

The Seahawks suffered their eighth shutout of the season after outshooting the Cougars, 14-8, and enjoying eight corner kicks. UNCW had a 9-4 shot advantage after intermission.

Cardamone provided the difference just 13:20 into the contest when the Downington, Pa., product made a run toward the box, passed the ball to Hannah Huizenga and then received it back before depositing the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net.

UNCW junior Katrina Guillou launched 10 shots on the day, including eight on goal, but CofC senior goalie Taylor Avery was equal to the task, coming up with a career-high 10 saves in her last home game.

Defender Allye Mertes, UNCW's lone senior, started and played her final game for the Seahawks.

GAME NOTES: Only four players had shots for the Seahawks…UNCW sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy had three saves in 90 minutes…It was the seventh game of the season decided by one goal for the Seahawks…The Seahawks could not come up with a win in their last four games, which featured three losses and a tie…Neither team qualified for the CAA Tournament…The two teams finished with identical 2-6-1 records in the loop…The Seahawks wound up 2-6 on the road this year and 1-4 in conference road games…UNCW still leads the all-time series by a 7-3-1 margin…Guillou finished as the team leader in goals (8) and points (18) in her junior year.
