Dukes Deal Seahawks 2-0 CAA Setback In Harrisonburg

HARRISONBURG, Virginia –  Sophomore midfielder Jennie Sroba struck early and junior defender Elissa Halik tacked on another goal midway through the second period as James Madison trimmed UNCW, 2-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer game early Sunday at University Park.

The Dukes pushed their record to 9-6-0 and 4-1-0 in the CAA this season. The Seahawks stand 7-7-1 and 2-4-0.

Coach Paul Cairney's UNCW club wound up splitting their weekend conference road trip after edging Towson, 2-1, on Friday at the Towson Soccer Complex.

In Sunday's loss to the Dukes, the Seahawks surrendered a goal to Sroba just 3:49 into the contest when she connected on a header off a corner kick. Halik also scored on a header at 75:06 to give the Dukes an insurance goal.

"Giving up an early goal on the road set us back," said Cairney. "We settled in after that and played well for long spells in the first half. In the second half, we created some good chances. Their goalkeeper made some good saves and we gave up another set piece goal in the second half.

"I thought we gave a great effort today. We'll try to bounce back and get ready to play Northeastern on Friday."

UNCW had a penalty kick thwarted late in the game when JMU goalie Ellen Forrest deflected the attempt off the mark. She finished with five saves en route to the shutout.

The Seahawks have just three games remaining in the regular season, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup against Northeastern on Friday, Oct. 17, at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Dukes travel to Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 17, to battle Drexel at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: JMU outshot UNCW by a 20-13 margin…It was the sixth time this season that the Seahawks failed to score…Junior defender Morgan Leyble led the Seahawks in shots with four attempts…Sophomore Liisa Rahkola played all 90 minutes in goal for UNCW and recorded four saves…JMU leads the all-time series, 19-5, and won its second straight over UNCW.
