Seahawks Outlast NC Central 78-68

DURHAM, N.C. – Four Seahawks scored in double figures to lead UNCW women's basketball to a 78-68 road victory against North Carolina Central on Friday night at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

UNCW earned its first victory of the season to move to 1-1 on the season, while NC Central fell to 0-2 overall.

Graduate guard Rori Cox poured in a team-high 21 points in 25 minutes off the bench, shooting 10-for-14 at the free-throw line. Cox also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. 

Icyss Storm, a freshman forward and Durham native, scored in double figures for the second straight game. Storm finished with a career-high 14 points while tallying four rebounds.

Storm also became the first UNCW freshman to score 10 or more points in each of her first two games since Mary McMillan, who accomplished the feat during the 2020-21 campaign.

Junior guard Paige Smith added 12 points, three rebounds and four assists in 20 minutes off the bench.

Senior guard Kate Hollifield tallied 10 points, three assists and a team-high four steals in 26 minutes, making three of her four 3-point attempts.

UNCW shot 23-for-53 (43%) from the field, while NC Central went 24-for-60 from the field (40%). The Seahawks' bench outscored the Eagles' bench 42-25.

The Seahawks closed the final two minutes and fifteen seconds of the third quarter on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to 62-40, their largest lead of the contest.

NC Central mounted a late comeback, outscoring UNCW 28-16 during the fourth quarter. The Eagles cut the Seahawks' lead to seven with 15 seconds to play, but could not draw any closer.

In the first half, UNCW stretched its lead to 15 midway through the second quarter and led 35-25 at halftime. UNCW shot 13-of-26 in the opening half while limiting NC Central to shooting just 9-of-30 from the field at the break.

Seven different Seahawks scored in the opening quarter, allowing UNCW to jump out to an early 21-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

With tonight's victory, UNCW secured the 200th road win in program history.

The Seahawks will return to Trask Coliseum for their home opener against Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
