Thach, Zelenka To Compete In MLB Home Run Derby X

The event will be Sept. 7 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW junior slugger Tanner Thach and senior Martin Zelenka have been selected to participate in the MLB Home Run Derby X set for Sept. 7, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Thach and Zelenka will compete on the Bullsharks team alongside former Major League All-Star Ian Desmond and Ashton Lansdell, who plays for the USA Women's National Team.

MLB Home Run Derby X is an exciting 3-on-3 co-ed competition built around power hitting and defensive hustle, with events in each city featuring four teams, each led by an MLB legend and female player from softball and women's baseball.

Thach belted a school-record 27 home runs for the Seahawks while helping them to their second straight Coastal Athletic Association tournament championship and NCAA Regional appearance. Thach also slammed eight home runs for Cotuit of the Cape Cod League.

In just two seasons with UNCW, Thach is the program's all-time home run leader with 42 roundtrippers.

In his first season with the Seahawks in 2024, Zelenka belted four home runs in 43 at-bats.

The Seahawks will compete against power hitters from NC State, Duke and North Carolina.
