Michael McDuffie was a giant in his sport at UNCW. The soft-spoken jumper competed four years for the men’s track and field team and established the long jump and triple jump records during his stint with the Seahawks. He still holds the indoor (51-3 ¾) and outdoor (52-0 ½) triple jump records for the team.

The Raeford, N.C., product won the CAA championship in the triple jump three times in 1996, 1997 and 1998. In 1997, McDuffie became UNCW’s first participant in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, just missing All-American honors at the national meet.

McDuffie was the runner-up in the triple jump at the 1995 Penn Relays and came back to capture the prestigious title at historic Franklin Field in 1997. One year later, he posted a provisional qualifying mark for the 1998 NCAA Championships.

When it was all over, McDuffie had collected seven All-East designations.
