Joel Gibson, a native of Gastonia, N.C., attended Frank L. Ashley High School before moving on to Wilmington College, where he put together two excellent seasons as a right-handed pitcher for the Seahawks in 1958-59.
The talented hurler posted an unblemished 6-0 record in his first season, with six complete games, and then followed that up by fashioning a 7-4 record in 1959.
He then transferred to North Carolina State and made an immediate impact on the Wolfpack program, tossing a no hitter in his first appearance with State and going 14-6 for the 'Pack, earning team MVP and All-ACC honors both seasons.
Gibson became the first Seahawk to sign a major league contract and to have his own baseball card.
