Seahawks Edge Spartans For Fifth Straight Victory

TAMPA, Florida – The UNCW men's tennis team bounced back from an early deficit with strong singles play to win its fifth consecutive match in a 4-3 victory over Michigan State on Sunday at the USF Tennis Complex.

The Seahawks improved to 6-2 on the season by defeating the Spartans in a neutral site match. MSU now stands 8-5 this spring.

Michigan State won the doubles match with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions before the Seahawks stormed back with singles wins at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to claim the match.

Sophomore Agustin Savarino delivered the clincher when he came from behind to knock off MSU's Michael Dube, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

"I was impressed with Michigan State and how they transitioned to outdoor tennis," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 10^th-year head coach. "We had our chances in doubles and came out really well. We were a break up on all three courts, but Michigan State played better as the doubles went on.

"We rebounded well in singles. Our group continues to show great character in the tough moments. We have made some strides in the last few weeks and it really showed today.

"Ignasi (de Rueda) and Agustin (Savarino) had to fight back after being down. I was really impressed with their competitive intensity. Today was a very strong team win against a good team."

The Seahawks return to the courts on Tuesday when they face the host Bulls at 1 p.m.
