Men's Tennis Champions Add New Recruits For 2018-19

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The defending Colonial Athletic Association men's tennis champions have signed a pair of recruits to National Letters of Intent for the 2018-19 season, giving UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois and his program additional talent to the roster.

DuBois announced the signings of Dillon Gooch of Carmel Christian High School in Charlotte, N.C., and Cole Groetsch of Chalfont, Pa.

"I'm really excited about Dillon and Cole and the exceptional potential they both have," said DuBois. "They both share the work ethic and character we are looking for in our team members and have shown tremendous success at the national level. They both demonstrated a true passion for our program and what our team is trying to accomplish. I can't wait to have both of them join us next fall."

Gooch is a four-star recruit who has been ranked as high as No. 108 nationally. He won North Carolina's three most prestigious tournaments last summer (N.C. Qualifying, N.C. Clay Courts and N.C. State Closed), compiling an impressive 15-0 record. He serves as team captain for two-time state champion Carmel Christian.

"We started recruiting Dillon very early in the process and both Alex (assistant coach Alex Wetherell) and I really enjoyed getting to spend time with him and his family," said DuBois. "Dillon is an exceptional athlete that has the values and character we are looking for in our student-athletes. He absolutely dominated North Carolina tennis this past year and is an exceptional competitor. Once he enters our training environment here, he will continue to make huge strides and build on our tradition of strong players that come from North Carolina."

Gooch, Carmel Christian's No. 1 player, chose UNCW because of its academic reputation, location and successful program.

"I chose UNCW because of the beautiful campus and surrounding city," said Gooch. "I visited a lot of different universities and their surrounding towns, but none of them left the lasting impressing like Wilmington did. I will fit right in with the guys on the team and the hard working culture the coaching staff and players have adopted. It makes UNCW the perfect fit for me to thrive athletically and academically."

Groetsch is also a four-star recruit who has been ranked as high as 57th nationally. He has been ranked No. 1 in the Middle States section and qualified for the Super National Hard Courts in Kalamazoo, Mich., the last three years.

"We found out about Cole from one of our coaching contacts a little bit later in the recruiting process," said DuBois. "His Coaches went on and on about his exceptional work ethic, character and his desire to be an elite player. What they said about him really resonated with me and when we brought him in on a visit, I could see what they were talking about.  He plays two-handed on both sides and is a very talented ball striker. He has consistently shown success nationally over every age group and I know he will be a great fit for our program."

Groetsch believes UNCW will provide a wonderful opportunity to sharpen his game and receive a quality education.

"I chose UNCW because I knew this would be a great place where I could get an amazing education and be part of a great group of guys," said Groetsch. "I was very impressed with how much the coaches and athletic department cares about you.  I also was impressed with the player development on the team.  I love the campus and the surrounding community. It is really a great opportunity for me to grow and develop as a person and a player for UNCW.  I am so excited to be part of the family. "

UNCW won its third CAA title in five years last spring and made its sixth appearance in the NCAA Regionals against No. 1 ranked Wake Forest. The Seahawks had five players honored by the CAA for their performances one year ago.
